: Hi: I scrapped my old W98 machine that ran this version ok and am now attempting to install it on a new Windows XP pro machine.

: Approach 97 loaded ok although it gave a warning about possible printing problems. I'm stumped however running the setup for ODP because it asks for a software s/n during the install. I have the order number from Hamilton new media. I have a customer number and a password ... but no software s/n?? Is this a XP requirement? How can I supply it with a s/n I don't have and can't recall being required on W98? What can I do? Is it worth it to install this old program on XP? What does a XP upgrade version cost?

I do not have any of Hamilton's records on serial numbers, but you can try entering ODP-000-xxxxx where the xxx is your order number. That works for some people.

You may encounter problems with Approach 97. It was never designed for and not tested with Windows XP. Several users of ODP have reported problems with printing to dot-matrix printers, and crosstabs will not print in that old Approach release. I have the much newer 9.7 version of Approach that I can send you on a CD for $49 plus postage.

The newest version of ODP is version 3.0, which would come with one CD of the 9.7 version of Approach. Version 3 has many new features you may like, and it has been tested on XP. Dot-matrix printers may still be a problem, however, depending on your printer type. ODP V3 is $300.
